Misnomer is an instrumental group from Atlanta, Georgia. What began as a collective of students at the University of Georgia in 2016 has evolved into a group of dear friends channeling their influences of neo soul, hip-hop, funk, jazz, and classical music to create something original. According to Flagpole Magazine, “[Misnomer’s] music is as exciting as it is uncategorizable. The horn-centric outfit blends jazz fusion, deep funk, instrumental hip hop, and modern classical to create an intoxicating sound that’s unlike anything else in town.” They draw influence from artists like Snarky Puppy, Moonchild, OutKast, Youngblood Brass Band, Kiefer, Vulfpeck, and Brasstracks.

In May 2026, they released their latest album, Forward, a suite of songs written by Matt Vu during the covid years. This release showcases their fresh take on instrumental music with deep grooves, satisfying harmonies, and catchy melodies. Misnomer has enjoyed sharing the stage with several national-touring acts such as Here Come The Mummies, Turkuaz, Marshall Gilkes, Couch, Shamarr Allen, and more. They have been recognized as Athens' Artist of the Year, and their 2019 album Neighborhood was voted Athens' Album of the Year by Flagpole Magazine.
