Description

Saturday, January 17 | 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Location: Wilburn Farm, 3899 N. Goddard Rd., Lithonia, GA 30038. Will park in the farm field.

Join Georgia Conservancy, Birds Georgia, DeKalb County Parks & Recreation, and the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area for an MLK Day of Service at Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve. We’ll be working at Historic Wilburn Farm, a culturally and ecologically significant site within the preserve. Once an active agricultural landscape, Wilburn Farm now serves as a key restoration area focused on improving native bird habitat and meadow ecosystems. This site is part of a multi-partner conservation effort aimed at restoring native grasslands, supporting migratory and resident bird species, and enhancing overall ecological resilience.

Our work will focus on removing non-native invasive privet from meadow restoration areas to open space for future native plant growth. This hands-on experience will focus on tree pulling, cutting, and hauling vegetation.

Safety and Accessibility:

This service project involves physical activity such as bending, pulling, cutting, and carrying plant material. We will be working in and around tall grasses and dense shrubs. Tasks can be adapted based on comfort and ability. If you have any concerns or limitations please contact Shaundon Moore at smoore@gaconservancy.org.

What We Will Provide:

  • Loppers and limited weed wrenches
  • A water cooler to refill water bottles
  • On-site porta potty
  • Work gloves are limited, please bring your own if possible.

What To Bring:

  • A refillable water bottle
  • Closed-toe shoes or boots
  • Weather-appropriate clothing that can get dirty
  • Work gloves (recommended)

Is This Family Friendly?

  • This is an intermediate fitness level project, so while we welcome families with kids, young children (6 and under) don’t do well.

Schedule:

  • 9:00 AM – Arrival, check-in, and welcome
  • 9:15 AM – Safety briefing, site overview, and task assignments
  • 9:30 AM – 11:45 AM – Stewardship work session
  • 11:45 AM – 12:00 PM – Wrap-up and cleanup

More About the Site:

The 2,550-acre DeKalb County park, located approximately 18 miles east of downtown Atlanta, includes miles of both paved and unpaved trails and paths, and features incredible granite rock outcroppings, wetlands, creeks, pine and oak forests. Dispersed amongst the natural beauty, visitors can find the historical remnants of the granite mining that occurred here in the early 1900s. Davidson-Arabia Nature Preserve is part of the greater Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, which includes key natural and cultural sites near Lithonia, including Panola Mountain State Park, Monastery of the Holy Spirit, and the Flat Rock Archives.
