As one of the oldest wineries in Mendoza, with a reputation for producing some of the best Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon in the region, the role of Chief Winemaker at Pascual Toso carries a tremendous amount of prestige and responsibility.

With such high expectations, Felipe Stahlschmidt is the perfect person for the job. Born in Buenos Aires and raised in Mendoza, he studied at the prestigious National University of Cuyo in Mendoza, where he graduated with a degree in Agronomic Engineering.

In 2005, Felipe became the Vineyard Manager at the Catena Zapata Winery. He was responsible for vineyard relations and grape supply. While with Catena, Felipe returned to his alma mater to earn a Master’s degree in Viticulture and Enology which, along with his deep understanding of the region, enabled him to join Catena’s winemaking team. It wasn’t long before he rose in the winery to oversee winemaking for the entire Vista Flores winery.

Winemaking became a passion of Felipe’s during his time working with different growers and vineyards in different regions. With many top Argentine winemakers as mentors, he was able to discover the different qualities in the grapes and the best techniques for vinifying them. This understanding helped him make wines that reflect the vineyards from which they come.

In 2015, Felipe’s drive, determination, experience and natural talent brought him to Pascual Toso. He took on the challenge of leading the winemaking team to discover the characteristics of the Barrancas terroir and continue making exceptional wines.

For Felipe, great wines are a representation of terroir from which they come. He believes that the wines he’s making for Pascual Toso are vigorous and full of character -- portraying the beauty of the “harmonious relationship” humans can have with nature.
