Join the Georgia Conservancy for a weekend on Sapelo Island that combines natural beauty, outdoor recreation, African-American cultural heritage, and service work.
During the weekend of October 11 - 13, we will host our annual Sapelo Island Service Weekend with our partners at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, University of Georgia Marine Science Institute, and Sapelo Island Cultural and Revitalization Society.
The Historic Reynolds Mansion on Sapelo Island is a luxurious island retreat. Home to 13 bedrooms, a bowling alley, billiards room, library and greenhouse, the Mansion is the perfect headquarters from which to explore the island. Guests will have the opportunity to spend the weekend with us at the Reynolds Mansion or at the dorms at the UGA Marine Sciences Institute.
- Friday: Leave the Meridan dock on Friday afternoon. Arrive on Sapelo Island for afternoon and evening explorations, group meals at the Reynolds Mansion and UGA, and a presentation from UGA Marine Sciences Institute.
- Saturday: Service work includes projects at the UGA Marine Sciences, Cabretta Island, Hog Hammock community, as well as maintenance and landscaping at the Reynolds Mansions and surrounding properties. The afternoon includes relaxation at Nanny Goat Beach and optional tour at UGA Marine Sciences Institute. Our evening will include an American Spirit Whiskey happy hour and a low-country boil at the Reynolds Mansion.
- Sunday: Optional sunrise beach sweep at Nanny Goat Beach with Bank of America followed by a bus tour of the southern half of Sapelo Island, including the Sapelo Island Lighthouse.
Don’t worry, the Sapelo Island Service Weekend isn’t all hard work and toil. Guests will also enjoy a historic tour of the island, exploration of Sapelo’s beaches and the facilities at the Reynolds Mansion.
In-kind donors and local food producers we will be enjoying during our weekend on Cumberland Island: Sweetwater Brewing Company (Atlanta), American Spirit Whiskey (Atlanta), and Cafe Campesino Coffee (Americus).
